Numerous efforts have resulted in the invention of an abundance of appropriate modeling concepts, languages, and tools. Today modeling activities often span multiple disciplines and have to be addressed by collaborative efforts across disciplines such as industrial automation, business engineering, hardware/software co-design, real-time system development, Web 2.0 application design, and so forth. As a consequence "model-based development" techniques related to the analysis and synchronization of families of models that are concurrently developed by different engineers on different levels of abstraction play a major role in many software and systems development projects. Graphs, on the other hand, are among the simplest and most universal models for a variety of systems, not just in computer science, but throughout engineering and the life sciences. Graph transformations combine the idea of graphs as a universal modelling paradigm with a rule-based mathematically well-founded approach to specify their evolution. As a consequence graph transformation concepts, languages, and tools offer an appropriate framework for specifying and simulating as well as for predicting and verifying critical properties of model transformations in different application domains such as ... * Bioinformatics and system biology * Civil engineering * Embedded & mechatronic system development * Image generation and pattern recognition techniques * Process control engineering * Self-adaptive systems and ubiquitous computing * Workflows and business processes The Journal on Software and Systems Modeling therefore invites original, high-quality submissions for its theme issue on "Software and Systems Modeling with Graph Transformations" focusing on foundations, applications, and tools that rely on graph transformation theory and offer nevertheless practical support for the enactment of model-based engineering processes.
